From graduate to growing professional: Will's first year with PKF Australia

When Will Punton joined PKF Australia as part of the 2026 Early Careers Cohort, he was looking for more than just a graduate role.

Will wanted a place where he could build his technical knowledge, gain meaningful client experience and develop alongside people who would support his growth.

After hearing positive feedback from friends already working at PKF, Will was drawn to the firm's collaborative culture and strong reputation for developing graduates. One year later, his experience has reinforced why it was the right decision.

Joining the Sydney Forensics team meant stepping into a fast-paced and varied environment where every engagement presents a different challenge. From commercial disputes to investigative work, Will has been exposed to complex matters that have accelerated both his technical development and his understanding of the profession.

The transition from university to full-time work came with a steep learning curve, but each new opportunity helped build his confidence. As his experience grew, so did his ability to take ownership of his work, contribute meaningfully to client matters and become more proactive within the team.

"The biggest learning experience has been building confidence and learning to take ownership of my work. Each matter has helped me strengthen my technical skills, ask better questions and become more proactive. Looking back, it's incredibly rewarding to see how much I've grown in such a short period."

Will's development hasn't been limited to his day-to-day role. Throughout the year, he embraced opportunities across the firm by completing LUCA Learning modules, speaking at PKF Australia's NEXUS conference and sharing his experiences on LinkedIn. These experiences have broadened his understanding of the business, strengthened his professional network and supported his preparation for the next stage of his CA journey.

Being involved beyond his role has also given him the opportunity to connect with colleagues from across the country and gain valuable insight into the different specialisations and career pathways available within PKF Australia.

Looking back, Will says one of the defining moments of his first year was realising how much he had grown in such a short period. As he became more confident managing his own work and contributing to client outcomes, he recognised that he was building the career he had hoped for when he first joined the firm.

For students considering where to start their professional journey, Will believes the opportunities available at PKF extend well beyond technical development. The supportive culture, approachable leaders and willingness of colleagues to invest in graduates have been key factors in his experience.

"Go for it. The culture is genuinely one of PKF's biggest strengths. I've been given opportunities and client exposure that I didn't expect so early in my career, and having an approachable team around me has given me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone. You're surrounded by people who are willing to support you and invest in your development."

Will's journey demonstrates the value of saying yes to new opportunities, getting involved beyond your role and making the most of every learning experience. It's a reminder that a graduate program is about more than building technical capability - it's about building confidence, connections and the foundations for a rewarding career.
