How PKF helped BISEC build a resilient industrial business

Bearing Industrial & Safety Equipment Centre (BISEC) is a family-owned industrial supply business servicing mining, engineering, agricultural and viticulture industries across Regional NSW. Established in 2000 by Michelle and Craig Gunton, BISEC has grown from a small retail operation into one of Mudgee’s most trusted suppliers of bearings, rigging and lifting equipment, safety gear, tools and trailer components.

As a regional industrial business operating in high-compliance and high-risk sectors, BISEC required more than a traditional accountant — they needed a trusted business advisory partner who understood both the numbers and the realities of running a growing SME (small to medium enterprise).

That partner has long since been PKF.

A long-term accounting partnership built on industry insight

Led by PKF Sydney & Newcastle Business Advisory Director, Andrew Beattie, BISEC’s relationship with PKF has continued through multiple growth phases, structural changes and economic cycles. From business structuring advice through to ongoing tax compliance and strategic financial guidance, we have acted as BISEC’s accounting and business advisory partner for more than two decades – since the start.

Through Andrew, and now fellow PKF Sydney & Newcastle Business Advisory Partner, Rebecca McCabe (Bec), our advisers brought industry knowledge and continuity of service, a key factor for a business supplying mining and industrial operations.

“The relationship has always been excellent. The people who’ve looked after us have been amazing, we couldn’t fault PKF at all,” Michelle said.

This consistency has enabled BISEC to make confident, informed decisions at every stage of growth.
While we provide core accounting services such as tax planning, payroll support and financial reporting, the value of the partnership extends well beyond compliance.

For Michelle, PKF acts as a sounding board for operational and strategic decisions, helping the business navigate complexity with clarity.

“If I’m not sure about something, I run it past Bec. She’s a sounding board, a numbers cruncher — everything. When I hear friends of ours talk about their accountants, I think, yeah, we’ve got it easy with ours.”

This advisory-led approach has been particularly important during periods of change, including system upgrades, reporting improvements and cost-control measures designed to support resilience during industry downturns.

Helping an SME navigate change, systems and growth

As BISEC expanded, so too did its operational complexity. With multiple staff, increasing inventory and evolving reporting needs, the business undertook significant system upgrades to improve visibility and control.

We provided hands-on accounting and advisory support, helping BISEC:

  • Transition between accounting and retail systems
  • Improve financial reporting and cost tracking
  • Identify inefficiencies impacting profitability
  • Strengthen internal processes and controls

These changes enabled better decision-making and positioned the business to withstand economic pressure in recent years.

Succession planning and future-focused advisory

Like many family-owned businesses, BISEC is now considering its next chapter. With succession planning and potential exit strategies on the horizon, Bec’s role has evolved to include strategic advisory and business transition planning.

When BISEC explored the possibility of selling the business, Bec and the team provided guidance and financial insight, helping Michelle and Craig understand timing, readiness and risk.

“When we came close to selling, PKF handled that with us — having that expertise was enormous.”

This forward-looking advice ensures BISEC can plan for the future with confidence, whether that means succession, sale or continued growth.

For Bec, she is a big believer that “Great companies deserve great financial services. I take stock of my clients’ needs to provide the best service possible, with a holistic approach that helps them to achieve their goals across all aspects of their business.”

BISEC’s success is closely tied to the strength of its advisory partnership with PKF. For more than 25 years, Andrew, Bec, and our team have combined technical accounting expertise with practical, relationship-driven advice. Today, we continue to help BISEC navigate change, protect value and plan for the future.

Michelle is commercially minded in her approach, “PKF have contributed enormously to our success. If they hadn’t, we would have left by now.”
