Trading names disappearing from ASIC Records: What you need to do before 1 November 2025

If your business still relies on "trading name" that hasn’t been transitioned to a formal business name, urgent action is required. From 1 November 2025, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) will permanently remove all unregistered trading names from the Australian Business Register (ABR). This change will affect how your business appears to customers, suppliers, and government agencies.

What’s Changing?

The move stems from the 2012 introduction of the National Business Names Register, which streamlined how business names are registered and maintained in Australia. Prior to this, many businesses operated under trading names that were recorded with state and territory authorities but not nationally registered. When the new register launched, those older trading names were grandfathered and temporarily retained on the ABR.

That grace period is now ending. As of 1 November 2025, any trading names not registered as a business name with ASIC will be removed from the ABR. This means they will no longer be visible when someone searches your ABN, potentially leading to confusion or credibility issues for your business.

Why It Matters

The implications are significant for any organisation that still uses a trading name that isn’t registered. For example:

  • Public visibility: Clients, suppliers, and partners often verify business details using the ABR. If your trading name disappears, your business may no longer be easily identifiable.
  • Compliance: Operating under an unregistered name that isn’t the business’s legal name could place your business in breach of the Business Names Registration Act 2011.
  • Professional appearance: An inconsistent or outdated name can erode trust and make your operations appear informal or non-compliant.

What You Need to Do

To stay compliant and maintain your trading name presence, you must take one of the following actions before 31 October 2025:

  1. Register your trading name as a business name through the ASIC Business Names Register. This process is relatively straightforward and can be done online via the ASIC website.
  2. Transition to your legal entity name if you no longer need the trading name. This may require updating signage, stationery, and digital assets.
  3. Check your ABN record on the ABR website to confirm which trading names are listed.

Avoid Last-Minute Surprises

The upcoming deadline is final. ASIC has made it clear there will be no further extensions beyond 31 October 2025. Businesses that delay may find themselves scrambling to explain name inconsistencies to clients, risking lost opportunities or reputational damage.

If your organisation relies on a trading name that’s not formally registered, the time to act is now. Review your current ABN details, determine whether your trading name is still active and necessary, and ensure its properly registered before the November cutoff. Staying proactive will help you avoid disruptions and maintain a clear, professional presence in the marketplace.
