PKF Lawler China Desk opens in Perth
23 Nov 2017
Leading Perth accounting firm PKF Lawler are spearheading a targeted move to capture Asia’s rising investment interest in Western Australia with the appointment of Xiaowen Shi as head of their new China Desk.
Strong and rising interest from Asian-based clients investing in Western Australia has PKF Lawler looking to the future by securing one of the accounting field’s brightest talents to head up a dedicated China desk in Perth.
Xiaowen Shi was handpicked by the local firm due to her wealth of experience in inbound tax advisory services to Chinese enterprises, her deep understanding of Chinese culture and her strong Chinese business network in Perth.
A native mandarin speaker, Ms Shi is a chartered accountant with a Master of Professional Accounting and a Bachelor of Computer Science.
Following her studies she worked at one of the big four accounting firms in Perth gaining years of experience in their International Tax Services division as a Senior Manager where she helped inbound clients with all stages of the investment cycle including initial entry, commercial structure set-up through to managing exit strategies.
Ms Shi also ran her own business Golden Opportunity Management assisting WA-based agrifood suppliers to gain Chinese market entry.
PKF Lawler Tax Partner Leigh Dyson said it was a strategic move bringing Ms Shi on board.
“The level of inbound and outbound investment with China and more generally Asia from Western Australia has been growing exponentially. In particular, large Chinese enterprises are seeking out firms that can provide a “one stop shop” for their Australian expansion,” Mr Dyson said.
“The appointment of Xiaowen Shi to head up our China Desk is a significant development for PKF Lawler and our clients. Ms Shi leads a team of people with extensive Asian experience and language capabilities and they work seamlessly with over 40 PKF offices in China with access to over 100 Partners and 2000 staff. PKF in China provides all services including Business Solutions, Assurance, Tax, Advisory and Hotel Tourism Leisure specialised consulting services. Additionally, the Perth China Desk can rely on expertise available in Greater China countries such as Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Ms Shi has considerable experience in advising inbound Asian based clients, operating in various industries from a number of foreign jurisdictions. She comes with a great pedigree, has extensive connections in the Chinese community in Perth and in her first week at our firm landed a large Chinese State Owned Enterprise contract.
We have previously seen a significant increase in interest from Asian-based clients seeking investment in assets based in the eastern states of Australia. We are now seeing this interest transition to Western Australia which is why we consider this market to represent one of the largest market growth areas.
Ms Shi’s addition to the PKF Lawler China Desk adds considerable experience to our Asia Business team and supports our view about the opportunities that this market presents to both our firm and Australia.”
Ms Shi said she looked forward to bringing her own brand of expertise to the PKF Lawler team.
“I have a deep understanding of the Chinese culture, bilingual communication skills with Chinese inbound clients, well established business relationships with major Chinese inbound clients operating in WA and tax technical knowledge to service inbound and outbound investments,” she said. “I am not a pure Business Development person. That, in my view, differentiates myself from the rest of the Asia Business Desk offered by the other firms.
I plan to travel to Asia once every quarter, as a minimum, to be connected with member firms and our Asia-based clients and potential clients, as it is the only way to quickly develop this part of the business.”
